Alpharetta, GA, February 2, 2009 – Provaré Technology today announced that its 2008 sales were up almost 200% from 2007 levels. This amazing increase in sales came in a year that most businesses would rather forget. In 2008, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 34%; the bottom fell out of the US housing market; global economies took a beating; and even bonds suffered a loss. The tech-heavy NASDAQ did even worse, falling 41% in 2008. Yet in the midst of this challenging climate, Provaré Technology had its best year ever.
“Although I don’t want to take this increase for granted – and I certainly don’t want us to rest on our laurels,” says Bill Tepper, CEO of Provaré Technology, “this result is not entirely unexpected. Companies laid off hundreds of thousands of employees in industries across the map in 2008. But at some point, those remaining behind realized that they still had to get the work done. Corporate executives cannot afford to be too lenient in a brutal business climate like we saw in 2008. In fact, they usually demand more effort and productivity from those employees remaining on the payroll.”

The unique project focus of the Provaré business model has perfectly positioned the company to fill the gaps left by cuts in both full time staff and contract employees. Provaré’s willingness and proven ability to do very short jobs, respond within hours of a request, produce needed results immediately, and stop as quickly as they start makes Provaré not only unique in its areas of expertise, but also makes it a highly coveted quality and productivity parter – now more than ever.

Even with most traditional staffing companies – including the ones that try to position themselves as Provaré’s competition – the minimum commitment is usually 3 months. Shorter engagements or early terminations dramatically increase the costs of such approaches. But as Tepper is always quick to point out, Provaré has done jobs as small as a few hours for the same rate as they charge for much larger jobs.

Yet there is more to the story than just an all-around increase in sales. The largest increases in revenue have come in the process improvement area of the business. “Again, I think it’s all about getting the maximum productivity from your people,” says Sandi Tepper, cofounder of Provaré and lead for Processes and Communications. “It may sound really good to have management chanting that ‘we must do more with less,’ but the successful companies are those that forego the chants and actually find a way to make it happen. Back in the days of ever-rising stock prices and consumer spending, our clients could afford to make productivity improvements a ‘nice to have’ on the priority list, but not anymore. Suddenly, such initiatives are getting visibility, budget, and top billing at corporate board meetings.”

At this point, Provaré Technology is planning for a more modest 20% increase in sales in 2009. “I would love to see us triple our sales again in 2009,” says Bill Tepper, “but I would prefer to err on the side of caution for now – at least in our budgeting.”

Even if Provaré were to experience zero growth in 2009, that will probably be far better than most companies will do. While the NASDAQ fell 41% in 2008, Provaré saw its share price increase 42%. Most investors would happily have traded their 2008 losses for a zero percent change.

Alpharetta, GA, November 17, 2008 – Provaré Technology began today testing the 2010 versions of Herff Jones yearbook design and layout software. This is the third consecutive year that Provaré has been the Herff Jones Yearbook Division’s primary QA resource. Products that have been updated for 2010 include Plug-Ins for Adobe InDesign as well as Clique, and HJ Planner.

“We truly value our long term relationship with Herff Jones,” says Bill Tepper, CEO of Provaré Technology. “It is obvious that Herff Jones places a priority on the quality of their products.”

Herff Jones targets a market where usability key to their products’ success. Their products are used not only by school faculty, but by the students on school yearbook staffs. But usability isn’t the whole story. The typical Herff Jones user is not a computer whiz kid – and school IT staffs are spread pretty thin, so any unexpected behavior in the software usually generates a call to Herff Jones technical support. Given the cost of maintaining a trained and efficient technical support staff, it is better for everyone if the software simply works reliably.

Nan Cayton, Herff Jones Yearbook Software Project Manager explains her quality focus: “Our ongoing challenge is providing desktop software that keeps Herff Jones in the lead in our industry, and serves as a catalyst for sales growth and retention. To achieve this goal, we need software that is reliable and that requires minimal updating during the school year. Reliable products translate into more selling time and less service time for our in-field sales force who often oversee any Herff Jones software installations in their client schools.”

Herff Jones first contacted Provaré Technology in September of 2007. Continues Cayton, “Since we began working with them in the fall of 2007, Provaré has provided an outstanding external source for testing that is helping us meet our quality and usability goals. We continue to be impressed with how thorough the testing has been. We especially value the detailed reports with screen shots and steps to replicate errors that we receive at the conclusion of each testing window. Bill and Sandi Tepper understand our needs – evaluating specific features of our desktop software as well as overall ease of use, while allocating their time and resources to stay within our budget.”
One of Provaré’s selling points for its software testing services is that by spending a little more testing before a product is release, a company can save a lot more on technical support costs after the release.

“As a result of our increased focus on both external and internal testing,” says Cayton, “the number of technical support calls for our desktop software has declined since we started working with Provaré. The dollars we budget are well spent when we are able to provide solid, user-friendly software that exceeds our customers’ needs and expectations. Provaré has been a major part of our desktop software success story.”

“We are fully convinced that our sales story concerning cutting technical support costs is true,” says Tepper, “but it is awfully nice to hear a customer say it too.”
Herff Jones is already planning to have Provaré test additional brand new products later in the spring.

Alpharetta, GA, August 28, 2008 — Provaré Technology is pleased to announce that its representatives will attend the University of Alabama Science and Engineering Career Fair to be held at the Bryant Conference Center on the University’s main campus in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Tuesday, September 23, 2008. Provaré has experienced significant growth and increased demand for its services thus far in 2008 and has boosted its recruiting efforts accordingly.

Both of the founders of Provaré Technology, Bill and Sandi Tepper, graduated from the College of Engineering at the University of Alabama, so they are both familiar with the College and have several friends on the faculty. “I am really happy to have the opportunity to recruit at the University,” said Mrs. Tepper. “I know from my experience both at Alabama and since that the engineers graduating from ‘Bama are as good as any in the country. And, to be honest, I look forward to any excuse to visit the campus again.”
One might be naturally expect Provaré to focus primarily on Computer Science graduates since it is in a software-focused business, but the Teppers are quick to explain that this is not the case at all. “We have clients in every field of technology development and in a variety of technology-driven services,” says Mr. Tepper. “What we need is the best engineers in any field because it is these engineers’ intelligence and ability to creatively approach and solve problems that will determine whether they’ll be successful at Provaré. You also have to remember that process improvement has become a large part of our business – approaching half. We need employees who not only can solve technical problems, but who can also apply technology to boost our clients’ productivity.” To that end, Provaré will be talking with engineers and scientists from any and all science and engineering disciplines while at the fair.

Because it is a service business, Provaré places special emphasis on recruiting, training, and retention of the best and the brightest employees. It meets these goals first by limiting its college recruitment activities to engineering schools and then by demanding very high GPAs. To address rentention, Provaré offers benefits that are not only unusual for other companies its size, but are better than many commercial employers of any size.

Perhaps most unusual in Provaré’s array of employee benefits is its employee ownership program. Provaré Technology maintains a profit sharing plan that is fully company-funded (i.e., there are no requirements for employees to contribute any of their salaries in order to participate). Without getting into the details, as the plan is administered, all Provaré employees are part owners of the company. More amazingly, although they have been repeatedly offered venture capital funding, Provaré’s founders have always declined. So not only are all employees part owners, but in fact, only employees are owners.
When asked whether their employee ownership culture benefits their recruiting efforts, Mr. Tepper responds “yes, but probably not the way you think it would. We find that some people are afraid of the perceived risk and responsibility. But that’s OK, because those are not the kind of people we want to hire anyway. So in a sense, it attracts the employees we want while filtering those we’d rather not hire.”

Alpharetta, GA, August 7, 2008 — Provaré Technology’s CEO, Bill Tepper, has been asked by the University of Alabama’s Department of Computer Science to join its Advisory Board. Mr. Tepper gladly accepted the request.

According to Dr. David Cordes, Head of the Department of Computer Science, the board exists to provide feedback and advice from industry leaders into the Department. Dr. Randy Smith will be taking the lead on increasing the Board’s involvement with the Department’s vision, direction, and future initiatives.
Tepper has visited the University on multiple occasions in order to establish a relationship with the faculty and staff of not only the Computer Science Department, but with the entire College of Engineering. He has spoken to Dr. Smith’s senior design classes and at evening meetings of professional societies concerning the importance of addressing quality and productivity in software development.

Tepper’s presentations are quite popular with students in both Computer Science and Management Information Systems because they are so different from topics chosen by most guest speakers. Naturally, he focuses on areas affecting the software quality and on the productivity of the teams that develop it. Students are astonished to learn not only that software testing is considered a separate but equally important career path, but that it is founded on a totally different temperament and skill set than software development. It is this unique and valuable voice that the University wants to be certain is heard on the Board.

Alpharetta, GA, July 30, 2008 — Provaré Technology today annouced that it has been asked by OPTI Medical Systems to assess their current software development processes and to make recommendations for improvement as part of their commitment to ongoing quality improvement and rapid innovation. “I have spoken briefly with Len Owens,” says Bill Tepper, CEO of Provaré Technology, “and some of the themes I am hearing sound very familiar. I’m confident that we’ll be able to help them.”

Len Owens is OPTI Medical Systems VP of Quality and Regilatory Affairs and was a client of Provaré Technology in late 2004 and early 2005 when he was the Director of Quality at Theragenics. “Provaré provided such good planning and validation services for me before that I decided to call Bill again when we needed a fresh look at our software validation practices,” says Owens.

When asked to help with process improvement of any kind, Provaré takes what seems to be a unique approach. Rather than being wedded to a particlular process model (Six Sigma, for example) Provaré listens to the client and tries to make changes in small increments, each of which provides an immediate measurable improvement. Improvements offering the biggest “bang for the buck” are implemented first. Provaré’s recommendations draw from any and all process models with anything positive to offer.

“The folks at Provaré are very customer focused,” continues Owens. “In fact, they are a breath of fresh air as compared to other consultants I’ve worked with. Most consultants try to create a niche for themselves by highlighting every possible problem area and then offering their services as a solution to all of them – without ever spending the necessary time understanding our experience, strategy, or goals. Provaré listens first and then helps solve problems by recommending state of the art solutions and then – most importantly – by providing the necessary transfer of knowledge to my organization. The result is that new capabilities are built and the consulting help is no longer needed – at least not for the originally identified need.”

“I am extremely gratified to hear Len say that,” says Tepper, “because that kind of client experience is exactly our goal. We have never felt a need to make work for ourselves. There are plenty of opportunities for improvement out there. If we work ourselves out of a job at each and every engagement, there will always be another client who desperately needs our help.”

Alpharetta, GA, April 17, 2008 — Provaré Technology remains the sole external testing resource for its scientific CAD software client in California. After almost two years of working with this client, Provaré has solidly established itself as a dependable go-to resource with both superior testing expertise and the ability to quickly learn the scientific and mathematical concepts required to test their world-renowned products. To that end, Provaré has increased its role and its level of effort with this client dramatically over the past 2 years.

“During the 2 years that we have worked with this client, we have seen astonishingly large turnover on their software testing team,” says Bill Tepper, CEO of Provaré Technology. “When they first approached us for help back in 2006, they were very clear that this was difficult work at which few engineers were successful. Apparently, their recruiting and hiring challenge has not gotten any easier. In fact, Provaré is the most senior ‘member’ of their team right now. Other than the testing manager and the two product test leads, every member of the testing staff has turned over at least once since mid 2006.”

Provaré often gets questions from potential new clients about staff continuity, which is to be expected. “Most of our ‘competitors’ are actually staffing agencies, even if they claim to specialize in software quality,” says Tepper. “This makes it practically impossible for them to achieve long-term continuity without continuous contracts. Our project-focused business model recognizes that our ‘intellectual property’ is not in our resumé database, but rather in the minds of our engineers. So we place a tremendous emphasis on hiring the very best engineers and then training and retaining them – for life if possible.”

Provaré recently received two new purchase orders totaling $244,400 from the subject client. Each of the two purchase orders is for testing to be performed on one of the client’s two flagship design products. In the last two years, Provaré’s role has grown from doing occasional testing one one of this client’s products to serving as a primary testing resource for both of its products. Provaré has now participated in multiple versions of these two products from concept to release.

“We are very grateful for the faith that our clients place in us,” says Tepper. “We never want to take any of these relationships for granted. If anything ever keeps me awake at night, it is my concern that we continue to meet their expectations as we grow. I guess if we can do that, we don’t have to worry too much about our future.”

Alpharetta, GA, April 7, 2008 — Provaré Technology today announced that it has been chosen as the sole software quality partner for Mapping Analytics LLC. Mapping Analytics is a leading provider of GIS-based software with a variety of sales and marketing applications. Provaré will be responsible for planning and executing test plans for all of Mapping Analytics new products and releases.

Gary Schwartz, Mapping Analytics Director of Software Development, made the final decision to go with Provaré Technology. “As a small company with a correspondingly small QA budget, Mapping Analytics really needed a resource that we could use on an as-needed basis,” says Schwartz. “Provaré’s unmatched flexibility was a perfect fit for us. Once we talked with Bill, we were totally comfortable that we had found the right quality partner. Whenever we need QA help in the future, we’ll be calling Provaré.”

When Mr. Schwartz mentions Provaré’s flexibility, he is referring to Provaré’s unusual willingness and ability to take very small tasks – as small as just a few hours – with minimal notice and no minimum time or dollar commitment. “We’ve done testing jobs as small as 5 hours,” says Bill Tepper, CEO of Provaré Technology, a fact that he is obviously proud of. “Regardless of what a P.O. [purchase order] or a test plan may say, if a customer needs us to stop testing, we simply stop – no questions asked. If we’ve only done 3 hours of work, they’ll only get billed for 3 hours.”

But their flexibility is obviously not the only consideration for Provaré’s clients. It is one thing to offer to do small tasks, it is quite another to actually deliver usable and useful results in such a short period of time. “Our goal has always been to establish ourselves as a company that can be trusted to produce superior results regardless of the size of the task,” says Tepper. “Our customers are invariably pleasantly surprised at how quickly we start finding bugs and how well we document them.”

The new contract has no expiration date and allows Mapping Analytics to take advantage of any combination of Provaré services.

Alpharetta, GA, March 5, 2008 — Over the past couple of days, Provaré Technology sponsored a medical device manufacturing conference at the Marriott Houston Intercontinental Hotel at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The conference was arranged and presented by Q1 Productions, a Chicago-based company specializing in small, high-power, industry-specific conferences aimed at executives of small business. This was the first time Provaré had sponsored an event like this.

“Truthfully, we agreed to sponsor this conference as much to gain the experience as to make new contacts – perhaps even more so,” says Bill Tepper, CEO of Provaré Technology. “It was definitely worth the time and money.”

Attending the conference were 56 executives representing 44 medical device manufacturing companies. Provaré was one of six hand-picked sponsors, none of which had any significant overlap in their products or services. When asked why he felt that the experience had been worth the expense, Tepper said that he had “…learned a great deal about the day-to-day concerns of small life sciences companies that I don’t think we really understood before – or could have learned in any other way. The program itself was interesting in an academic sense, but we learned a lot more from the questions coming from the attendees. I have believed for a long time that we had a lot to offer this industry. This experience removed any lingering doubt. They are in desperate need of our help.”

When asked to elaborate, Tepper was hesitant to add any detail. But he did say that Provaré would be significantly expanding its efforts to reach out to the life sciences industry in the coming months.
Medical devices are among many types of products whose development, manufacture, distribution, and advertising are heavily regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This oversight presents a unique set of challenges to any company doing business in any of these industries. As a result, companies in life sciences are hesitant to trust consultants that cannot demonstrate proven success in such areas. While Provaré Technology’s client base is much broader than life sciences, it has certainly proven that it has the necessary knowledge and skills to serve this industry.
